what i think of the new alice in chains

hey im bryan 20/m/az. i love alice in chains and miss layne. but i think its lame how the band is touring without layne and using the same name, since the band is not AiC without layne. it should be called something like "the jerry cantrell band" or "the new alice in chains" or something different. i thought the same thing about the band Drowning Pool, since they totally changed in sound and image with that horrible 2nd singer. but yet they too kept the same name and it ruined the band's original flawless image.

i dislike maynard james keenan, and i dont see much talent in wes scantlin (puddle of mudd singer) either, and i dont know who that william duvont guy is, so in other words they made a poor choice in guest singers during their live shows recently for the tsunami benefit shows. the singers from Heart were okay for a little since they actually DID sing with layne and some of the others in the band at once, but they butchered the Rooster song when they and other guests sang it live that one day. maynard was the worst, he turned Man in the Box into a shitty song, and i hate him even more for it.

so in conclusion, if theyre going to continue on, they should change the band's name. and also, if theyre gonna have a guest fill in for layne, it should be someone who's actually a good singer, or can somewhat sing like layne, or someone who actually sang with the band at one point. because i think right now they are ruining the band's image! the only good thing is to see them performing together again after so long. keep up the hard playing and rockin out, but make a few important changes!

Re: what i think of the new alice in chains

There is no good way of continuing Alice In Chains.  Either way they go they will lose some group of fans.  No other singer out there can replace Layne.  Maynard has a great voice but just doesnt fit with the band.  Duvall is nothing special... If he sounds anything like he did when singing backup for Jerry on his solo tours then I know I wont like it.  He was the only bad part of hearing those songs.

So, who can sing these songs? Layne and Jerry and no one else.  They will never sound the same again.  I just hope that if after this fall tour they decide to continue on, they reinvent themselves with a new singer and never play the alice songs again.  I love these songs just like anyone else here but to me you can't do the songs justice without Layne.  It would be like a very good (musically that is) cover band playing these songs...   That will probably never happen but I think it would probably be the best...

Re: what i think of the new alice in chains

i dont like william s voice as well

maybe they have to change the name or bring someone like chris cornell, travis meeks or dax riggs to who are all great singers

i cannot understand why they choose william....

even the singers from second coming or mercy clinic  were miles ahead than this

Damn, you shouldn't look at it so negative (no offense!). Sure Layne was great, but there are 3 other members, remember? They created the band all together and are entitled to do whatever they want. They're touring all over the world now, with their new singer, William, who has done an amazing job so far. When I saw them live, it was one of the best things ever happening to me...

It's not because Layne passed, that AiC isn't allowed to exist anymore. With or without William, Layne or whoever these guys are far too talented to not be occupied with music.

Also, seeing a live show and hearing some mp3s with the "new formation" should change everyone's mind right away, Heheh..

Exactly, it's about having a open mind. Look at AC/DC, their singer died as well. ( R.I.P My good man) and everyone said they would never be good again and blah blah blah. And look what happened with them.

For right now these shows are a tribute to Layne and for the boys to jam together again. William is a great singer in his own right and he is doing Layne justice while being able to have his OWN sound and not be a carbon copy of Layne.

For christ sake man, open your mind.

First off, agreed, however, WIlliam DuVall is not a good singer for bringing Alice back. He's just not a good singer period.

    Second, AWESOME SIG!!!

Layne was the integral part of Alice in Chains.  His voice was the defining factor.

DuVall does a good job at paying tribute to the songs we all know and love -- and I have a lot of respect for him for that -- but that's as far as it goes.

And yes, I agree, the guys are "far too talented to not be occupied with music" -- but (after this Tribute Tour) to continue with a "new guy" and yet still be called Alice in Chains would be a travesty (IMHO).

Re: what i think of the new alice in chains

Sure, that's true...but I wouldn't mind them recording some new stuff though, with William it would be a good choice I think, he has potential to sing the songs at least correctly, ofcourse it won't be "the same" , but am interested in seeing how Jerry could provide more guitarriffs and what the new lyrics would look like... Them going on tour is something that wasn't supposed to happen anymore, since they quit and the leadsinger even died, so I guess this is just a luck for the fans to begin with and a chance for younger fans (agewise),as myself, to see at least 3 of the 4 heros in action Smile

exactly, William was the best choice. gah I'm glad I wasn't alive when AC/DC was going through the crap. If AIC loses some fans over this it'll be really sad but also really nice cause all the negative people will be gone listening to their old AIC and Nirvana records alone in their rooms while we're having a fun time at AIC shows :)

Re: what i think of the new alice in chains

I don't think that changing the band's name is that important, it's part of their history and what they feel is right for them, It's right for me.  However, I wouldn't like them to do this touring and playing their old songs forever. I hope they go back into the studio and make some kick ass music...

In the end it's all about the music. If their new music sucks, that's when they  won't have my support.  About how they choose to respect Layne, that's not  for me to judge, I'm just a fan and they were friends.

Re: what i think of the new alice in chains

I saw them @ the Avalon in Boston. One of the best shows i've seen in a while! William is great, at least if your gonna throw digs get the guys name right. He's not tryin to be Lyne either he has his own style. If you don't like it don't see them live. it's as easy as that. I am so pumped that those 3 are playin together again. You couldn't find a better fit than William Duvall.

    new AIC? NO WAY !!!!!!!!!!!!

hey out there.i would just like to know how many of you are happy with the new AIC? i think it's a load of crap.Layne was Alice in Chains.how can you replace the best vocalist ever? i think if they so choose to form a new band they should change their name..after all,Layne did come up with the name.AIC died with Layne and i think it's a dishonor to all true fans to reform this band.anyone care to debate this with me?

    What he said.

And William is actually a great fit for the band right now.  Whether you like his style or not, that is your opinion.  However,he has found a great common ground between copying Layne's tremendous style and using his own style.  The people who are disrespecting him only prove they have no clue.
